Walls Go Up and The House Starts to Take Shape

The paper is coming off in Bailey's room and it is looking MUCH better. I hope to finish peeling paper, and maybe start some plastering before the guys get back from scout camp. I think if this room starts to get cleaned up, the whole house will feel better. Imagine lilac and butter yellow and dragonflies and wish me luck.

Seth and Ben's room, cleaned out. It just needs one crack patched and there is one spot where the plaster needs to be fixed. Then, they are headed for butterscotch on the walls, with twig furniture, fish nets and old fishing poles on the walls...
Teddy's room started getting drywall this week! He has bear tracks on his bedding and will get a wainscoat level barn wood with a red drybrushed finish and cream upper walls. His train table will be in the corner.

The kitchen got a back wall this weekend. The doorway that goes into the utility room is what you see in the background and the stove will be centered on the kitchen wall. The ceiling in the kitchen will be made from a pile of bead board that was in the barn. The floor will be tile, something that will pull in the brick and still be warm.

I caulked the crown molding and painted a section of this wall this week. It looks so nice and warm. The woodwork will be uniform throughout the house and will remain about the same color. Mom gave me a tip to make the paint stick, so I will be applying a flat Kilz and then the trim paint. This room needs a little more work, but is coming along.

We have a working toilet. Do you have any idea how nice a working toilet is? I will keep the pattern on this floor and probably paint the walls a light cream since the room does not have a window. This room will utilize a dresser from the house with a vessel sink and faucet. The mirror will be one that was on a dresser that we did not save. So this room will be recycled.

June 20-22nd Burning, Ghost Hunters and Drywall-Oh My!!

What didn't go at auction and was in disrepair needed to be cleaned out of the yard. It was disappointing to not see everything go, but it was also very theraputic to watch it go up in flames...
Here is our ghost hunting team! They came at 6:00 to get the layout of the house and ask if we had seen, heard or felt anything. They came back at 11:00 with camcorders and tape recorders. They were in the house, barn and grounds for a couple of hours and didn't see or hear anything. We will get their final report once they have listened to their tapes and done their review.

On Saturday, it was time to drywall!! Karen came to the auction last week and offered to come and help. She came for a tour on Wednesday and got to the house, ready to hang drywall. Karen worked alongside Charles for 8 hours carrying, cutting and hanging drywall. Aren't new friends wonderful! Karen looked at the house in February and knew it was more than she wanted to take on, but had a love for the house and wanted to help get her back to her glory.

Mom and Dad taking a much deserved break after spending 8 hours working in the yard. Dad came down with his tractor. They cut small trees, sprayed 8 gallons of poison ivy and weed killer, dragged the trees to a burn pile, mowed the yard, around the barn and the corral and cleared out the rest of the stuff that was in the yard. The yard looks incredible. I can't wait to see what it will look like after a couple years of regular care. They came early on Sunday morning and spent two and a half more hours sweeping the stairs, setting up for the party, cleaning off the front porch and filling in the ruts.

Teddy spent some time on Saturday scrapping wallpaper in Bailey's room. We are making some progress in there and I hope to make some good progress while Charles is gone in the bedrooms; especially this one!

We have been so impressed with Seth and Ben. They each have their own cordless screwdrivers, tool belts, hammers and tape measures. They work right along side us making this old house a home. After this weekend, Ben loves putting up drywall. He spent several hours putting screws in with his favorite screw gun a Makita cordless.

Auction Day and the Very Messy Day Before

Thank goodness for family! Meg came in from Hermann and left the girls with me. It rained 3 inches in Sturgeon on Thursday night and Friday morning. It was gross up there. Meg and Seth moved their first piece of furniture at 12:05 in the afternoon. Charles used the weedeater on the yard and then got Sam's truck out to the barn to start moving stuff. Chris and Travis came in from KC (a 2 1/2 hour drive) with 4 wheel drive truck and trailer. I got there at 6:00 with pizza and started mucking through the goo. The last load was unloaded from the trailer and we left at 9:42. There was an unbelievable amount of stuff in there. Charles, Seth and Ben got up at 5:00 Saturday morning and went back up to unload the stuff that was in the house. Mom and Dad got there about 7:00 and started scrubbing furniture.
For the Ford side of the family...this is a picture of Chris' Chevy, stuck in the mud. Meg is hooking up chains to her Ford to give him a tow. The Ford pulled the Chevy out of the muck!!!
The view from the driveway into the front yard.

Looking from the front yard down the driveway...

The top picture is of Jack Bodine in his truck getting the job done. There was a man named Green and one other there as well helping with the auction part. We didn't make nearly as much as we should have, but the stuff is gone and we did have a really good bonfire the next day!!

subfloors, bath tubs and auctions...oh my

We are starting to see progress now. Seth and I went out on the porch of the house. Charles thought we were nuts, but the coon mess on that porch just had to go. It was nice to be out there and the deck is very sturdy (obviously, if I let Seth out.) There is a little of the original beadboard from the roof of the old porch and YEAH!!!!!! The old eaves are definitely there and appear to be in good shape. So we get to take down the second level of the porch. (Probably after we move in)
With the floors done, we were able to frame in the back of the kitchen and sub-floor the kitchen! It looks soooooo much better with a kitchen floor in place! Just the corner where the plumbing needs to come up was left open. We can see the kitchen footprint, the bathroom footprint, the utility room footprint...It was really cool. Electricity and plumbing are lining up now to go in, so hopefully before the 22nd, we will have a wall or two up. I can't wait!!!
Nancy and I pulled nails for about 3 hours. It is really unbelievable how many big old nails are in woodwork like this. We kept quite a few and put them into a glass jar.
Bathtubs went upstairs this weekend too. My jetted tub is in its' spot and the kids tub is in place too. It is sooooo exciting!

May 31 and June 1st

This weekend we did some yard work and had a big fire. I discovered/uncovered a concrete pad near the entrance to the corral. At first, I was concerned that I had found an old well that the kids could fall through, but it is a big rectangle pad with no hole in the middle. Christopher brought down his new toy and had fun cutting and burning. I think it might be the big burn piles keeping him coming back week after week...that boy does love his fires. The chainsaw and the big fire made for a fun morning and the new grill made a nice lunch time. Then we got back to work on the kitchen.

Charles had to play too. He took on a thirty footer that was wrapped up with another one. Needless to say, it is still standing there and my be standing there for a while! Boys and their toys...
Destruction in this picture is almost complete. We just need to remove the bathroom ceiling and wall between the furnace and toilet. Wouldn't it be nice if we could keep the whole thing as a kitchen? But then there would be no place for a washer/dryer/hot water heater/water softener... We made a small change in the floor plan for the kitchen/utility room. We added a doorway from the kitchen to the utility room which will allow us to shut the door and keep the laundry pile from being seen in the kitchen. There is a french door that was sitting in the kitchen waiting to be installed at the top of the stairs to go on to the porch that we are going to use half of. I think we will put the opaque glass in it so we keep the light from the two windows cming into the kitchen.

Another view of the whole kitchen/laundry room/bathroom space...

This next one is funny. Blue fell off the end of the sub floor and couldn't figure out how to get out. I just had to take a picture.

And of course, the obligatory picture of the two little ones playing in the sand with a frog they found. How cute are they!!
